The southern metropolitan area of ​​Port-au-Prince and the northern suburbs may get connected through a ferry service. This potential solution to the overcrowded traffic of the city was discussed on July 24th by the representatives of the National Port Authority (NPA) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Present at the meeting were engineers Alix Celestin, Director General of the National Port Authority; Ginelle Christmas, Coordinator of the Planning Unit; Jean Carrel Delpé, Director of the Technical Office; and IFC representatives Ary Naim and Philip Neves.

According to the National Port Authority, the main topics discussed were: Difficulties in managing the flow of people; The development of a public-private partnership between local transportation companies and the Government; The locations of sites of embarkation and disembarkation; and The number of shuttles needed.

The authorities recognize that heavy traffic slows down the entire economy and envision using the sea as a solution to the ineffective roads network. As for now, Port-au-Prince inhabitants and visitors may lose hours in traffic driving across the city.

If completed, this project would particularly impact the residents of South Port-au-Prince (Carrefour, Mariani, Gressier, Leogane) attending the Downtown Port-au-Prince, Delmas and Cité Soleil.
