Labor cost in Haiti is 0.48 US Dollars an hour in the manufacturing sector

The Center for Facilitation of Investment (CFI) has published new brochures describing Haiti's advantages for investors in the Manufacturing and Tourism industries.

In the Manufacturing sector, CFI presents some data on the cost of labor, electricity, and construction in Haiti.

According to CFI's document, the labor cost in Haiti in the manufacturing sector is 0.48 US Dollars an hour, which is only $4 a day, $24 a week, and about $100 a month.

This is twice less than in the Dominican Republic where workers earn 90 cents an hour, and 4 times less than in Mexico. It is also much less than the labor cost in parts of Asia. In India businesses would pay their employees 83 cents an hour, and in China 1.44 dollars. Bangladesh and Cambodia's rates are 33 and 32 cents an hour, respectively.

For Haitian workers the normal work week is comprised of 48 hours, which means that employees could work for 48 hours a week without overtime pay, same as in India and China. Workers in the Dominican Republic and Mexico would only work 44 hours a week without overtime.

The electricity cost in Haiti is one of its main disadvantages. It is exorbitant at US $0.96 per KwH compared to US $0.14 in the Dominican Republic, US $0.15 in Mexico, US $0.086 in India, US $0.065 in China, which is 15 times less than in Haiti, and US $0.053 in Bangladesh.

According to the same source, the industrial space construction cost is US $160 per square meter in Haiti. In the Dominican Republic it costs US $220 and US $250 in Mexico, much more than in Asia where the cost is US $140 in India, US $97 in China, and US $120 in Bangladesh.
