There are 915,000 Haitian immigrants and their children who live in the US, shows RAD Diaspora Profile, a study by Migration Policy Institute for the Rockefeller-Aspen Diaspora Program (RAD).

The number of Haitian Immigrants in the United States increased fast in the last decades, from 90,000 in 1980 to 915,000 present. Most of them migrated to the US before 2000, as is true for US immigrants overall.

Most Haitians in the US live in the states of Florida - 275,000 (mostly in the Miami area - 200,000) and New York - 160,000. About 40,000 Haitians reside in Boston and its surroundings.

Income

Data shows that Haitian immigrants in the US have a lower income and lower education levels compared to the US population overall.

Haitian Diaspora household median income is $37,000, which is $13,000 lower than median for all US. However, the second generation (born in the US to a Haitian family) was able to have a higher income than their parents.

14% of Haitian Diaspora households in the US reported annual income above $90,000, compared to

25% of US households that earn this income.

4% of Haitian Diaspora households exceeded $140,000 in annual reports income, the threshold for the top 10% of US households.

Remittance Volume

In 2012, the Haitian Diaspora sent $1.6 billion to Haiti, which represented 20.6% of its $7.9 billion GDP.

Diaspora from the US sent $1.1 billion dollars during 2012, Haitians from Dominican Republic sent $258.6 million, and those from Canada $131.2 million.

Education

The study shows that immigrants from Haiti are not as well educated as the general US population, but the second generation have made significant educational advances, graduating from college and earning advanced degrees at rates above the general US population.
