Overview

  • PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (sentinel.ht) - A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince on Friday said that it was "firmly committed and strongly in support of the holding of elections in Haiti in 2015."

The statement from the embassy said:
The United States are firmly committed and strongly support the holding of elections in Haiti in 2015. The United States believe that transparent, credible and inclusive elections this year and the installation of a newly elected parliament and a president in early 2016, are the only means of restoring the institutional balance required by the Haitian Constitution and an adequate representation of the Haitian people for the public interest.

In partnership with the Haitian government and the Haitian people, the United States will continue to give strong support for activities promoting better stability and prosperity for all Haitians [...] It is critical to support and strengthen democratic institutions of Haiti until the 2015 elections to ensure the success continues in these areas."

Elections are four years past due and a since the 2010 earthquake, Haitian democracy had degraded from 5,000 functioning elected officials to only one.
