The violence was affecting a lot of innocent civilians, and Louino 'Robi' Robillard, one of the co-founders of Solèy Leve, began noticing that a lot of promising young leaders were getting discouraged. Some were saying that it seemed like only gangsters and politicians got recognition in Cite Soleil. They wondered why they risked their lives to make small positive changes that could be destroyed in a day by people with guns. Robi realized that something had to be done to show these young people that their work was not in vain, that it was valued, and that they were the true leaders in this community. less

After the earthquake of January 2010, this 5-year fund was created to provide relief and reconstruction support to communities in Haiti and Haitian-Americans in the Greater Boston area.
Governed by a 37-person Advisory Council, the vast majority of whom are Haitian or Haitian American, the Haiti Fund firmly believes that Haitians should be at the center of reconstruction efforts. For long-term sustainability to be achieved, we must build the capacity of the government and civil society to meet the needs of the people.
Since the earthquake, the Haiti Fund has transformed donations from individuals, community groups and corporations into direct assistance to the people of Haiti. To date, more than 1,600 individual donations have been made totaling nearly $3 million. Approximately $1.4 million of these funds have been disbursed through 71 grants made to organizations in Boston and Haiti. Through its grantmaking, the Haiti Fund has led the way in identifying key development trends in Haiti including grassroots advocacy, decentralized development and capacity building. less
