  • Description: The Haiti Fund at the Boston Foundation is an expression of the Greater Boston community’s concern for the people of Haiti, and their local Boston friends and relatives. After the earthquake of January 2010, this 5-year fund was created to provide relief and reconstruction support to communities in Haiti and Haitian-Americans in the Greater Boston area. Governed by a 37-person Advisory Council, the vast majority of whom are Haitian or Haitian American, the Haiti Fund firmly believes that Haitians should be at the center of reconstruction efforts. For long-term sustainability to be achieved, we must build the capacity of the government and civil society to meet the needs of the people. Since the earthquake, the Haiti Fund has transformed donations from individuals, community groups and corporations into direct assistance to the people of Haiti. To date, more than 1,600 individual donations have been made totaling nearly $3 million. Approximately $1.4 million of these funds have been disbursed through 71 grants made to organizations in Boston and Haiti. Through its grantmaking, the Haiti Fund has led the way in identifying key development trends in Haiti including grassroots advocacy, decentralized development and capacity building.
